Average IQs, effects, and what is considered high.?
Hi,
I have a high IQ, >135 or so some tests have told me, and I constantly find myself frustrated with others. I’m not one of those kids who are simply good at math, and have delved in philosophy by myself, and in trying to find a meaning to life became suicidal (am now seeing a psychologist) (long story short I am smart but not just good at a specific field).
I really am seeking an answer from someone else like me who has a bit more life experience.
What is the average IQ, and how does this effect peoples perception of things, i.e. do they see things at a different level to me or once they have seen something do they think differently about it.
Also, could you please link me to a few good, free online IQ tests so I can further test my number (as I don’t want the wrong number from a not so good test).
Best answer WILL be awarded, but only for quality answers.
The average IQ is 100. Period. The tests are continually recalibrated to reflect new norms as even a basic elementary school education is more common now than in the early days of psychological testing (the early 1900s). So back then 100 was more like 80 is now. But the mean is always 100. The standard deviation is 15 points — so, long statistical story short, if it’s 130 or above, your IQ is higher than 97% of the population.
Of course, as one of the other posters points out, depending on your circumstances and interests you may be hanging out with a lot of people in that same 3% range, so don’t just assume you are the only smart person in the room.
My IQ is in the 135-140 range (depending on which test, they vary). I suggest you don’t get too hung up on it, as psychologists consider it a problematic construct. IQ definitely measures something having to do with intelligence, but it’s not a fixed capacity. Something like your height or your eye color is fixed — it’s not going to change. But intelligence is not a good predictor of much, really, that is useful for telling you how to live your life. People with lower IQs but who have good social skills and work hard will generally be way more successful and happy in life than people who have high IQs but refuse to challenge themselves or learn how to relate to people.
Basically, if you have a high IQ, you will need to challenge and develop yourself just the same way as a person with an IQ of 100 would. Abstract thought will come easier to you than for the “average” person, but most of life is not abstract thought — life is made happy by people and relationships and activities that you find meaningful. Which may sometimes involve using your wonderful capacity for abstract thought, and sometimes may be a use of your other skills, interests and talents which are not measured by — or limited by — IQ.
Good luck to you!
