Chess: Online rating program for kids/beginners…?
I’m looking for a quick way to rate my students. I have a chess club for 6th grade students and would like to rate their play with a quick online program. Most of the students are beginners but I have a few that are moderately strong, probably within the 1300-1500 range.
Basically, I’m looking for an estimated elo rating. These are all beginners, however, there are a few much stronger than the others. I just wanted to pair the stronger players together and needed an idea of just how strong they are.
I did a google search on “chess quiz elo” and there are quizzes that might be what you’re looking for, for example at http://www.chessmaniac.com/ELORating/ELO_Chess_Rating.shtml. Probably not horribly accurate, but it could give you a basic idea.
I am guessing that your best 6th grade students are not in the 1300-1500 range since that would put them close to the top 100 nationally for their age group. I am quite surprised to see that there’s an 11-year-old from California rated 2211!
Updated: when I took the quiz on chessmaniac, it gave a pretty accurate estimate of my established rating. After analyzing the quiz, however, I can only recommend it with reservations. Entering the worst moves I could think of, the lowest ELO I could get was 1380. At least one of the quiz questions appears to have no effect on the outcome, and none of the questions appear to have been checked with a computer. Still, it’s an interesting set of problems.
There are similar tests in some chess magazines and chess software (Chessmaster for example).
I’m thinking that your best bet would be to post your students’ games here, anonymously, with the question “What rating would you estimate White (or Black) based on this game (or games if you have a couple)?” Look at the responses, and it should be pretty easy to spot the people who know what they’re talking about.
