How do you get rid of blue mud daubers when the nest is not exposed?
Two blue mud daubers have built nests in our deck, one under the railing and one under the deck. Both places have only a small hole as the entrance. I have tried spraying as far into the holes as possible on two occasions, but the wasps are still returning. I haven’t been able to find much advice online, except to paint my deck sky blue (which isn’t going to happen). They tend to have turf wars with the local paper wasps, and I’m concerned my kids will get stung. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!
Blue mud daubers tend to be solitary species and usually do not attack unless provoked. The two wasps are making a nest to lay their eggs. They will seal it and abandon the nest and next spring, the wasps will emerge as adults.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it. We had a bunch of these wasps in our backyard when I was a kid and I never got stung nor anyone I know of was every stung by a blue mud dauber. If you really want to kill them, just grab a broom and whack them when they land.
